Five Minute Friday : Hands

When the last few weeks of the homeschooling grind get tough we go outside. A break from our beloved kitchen table is sometimes, just the thing we need. So on Tuesday we spread our blanket in Central Park. We ate veggie pasta, chased butterflies, Ila finished a little math. Just before 3pm, I checked in with my teen to let him know where we were. He’d meet us later.

The area we entered at 106th Street was definitely a mellow spot. A family watched their toddler nap in a stroller, a young couple spooned together next to a pile of backpacks. A collective “chill out” sign might have hung from a tree.

It was that kind of day. That kind of spot, when a school group and 2 teachers joined us. It’s a public park, for the enjoyment of all, but that enjoyment is only assured when we all follow the unspoken code. You arrive, check out the lay of the land…it’s mood. You feel the match and settle in.  Continue reading “Five Minute Friday : Hands”

Atlas Girl : Designing Woman {guest post}

In 1997, a team of designers traveled to Europe to deliver a full scale fashion show on the largest glacier in Iceland – Vatnajokull. I was one of them.

My husband and I were 2 years into our marriage with no children. Living the pasta and tuna reality of a fashion designer and his former dancer turned muse and creative director – running a business. A tiny piece of commercial space in New York City…our dream hub and refuge.

Because we didn’t have any children didn’t mean we didn’t want any. We were recovering from the late loss of a long-awaited pregnancy. Clinging to each other and God for hope. Answers. Work turned salvation. I’d learned to sew in junior high school and picked it up as a hobby. My work naturally complemented his aesthetic. We were a great team.

Emily Wierenga makes room for my story today. Read the rest hereContinue reading “Atlas Girl : Designing Woman {guest post}”

Give Me Grace : 18 years

18years

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! -from Ephesians 3:20

 18 years

I scraped sardine cakes from my favorite pan today. The expensive non-stick skillet couldn’t live up to its differential advantage. My carefully crafted coating is delicious – just no longer part of the breakfast treat I worked so hard to prepare. I’m salvaging what looks more like seafood hash than cake. It’s still tasty but not the cute patty we enjoy when my favorite brand is on sale.

It was after 10 a.m. With scrambled eggs and fruit waiting on dollar store paper plates, I remembered aloud “Debate club starts this afternoon.” Which led to the twisting of my maternal auto focus lens. It zoomed in on the details of my day.  Continue reading “Give Me Grace : 18 years”

Sometimes…on taking a break : musings on slow

Sometimes…my head aches with the dull roar of too many thoughts. Scampering one after another across so many channels – the magic of the synapse. A transference of information…One thought leading to another. And yet another. It’s electrical but I feel my mental cup…runneth over. I crave slow…snail mail and aimless walks. Sometimes just enough will do just fine.

My love of words and now the public sharing of them has reached an unexpected apex. And this is the part where I continue, where I learn to climb over and through, visit and revisit my exploration of writing. This is the part where by faith, I take a little break.  Continue reading “Sometimes…on taking a break : musings on slow”
